The 2008 Distinquished Alumni Award (as presented by Becky Smyth
(Class of 1963) at the 2008 Alumni Banquet)
Mrs. Carolyn Stone, 1950 New Harmony Graduate
2008 New Harmony Distinguished Alumnus!!
Just who is this distinguished alumnus? Here with us tonight and sitting
among us? She was salutatorian in '48. Graduating later from Indiana
State. Spending summers and nights at U of E. Eventually receiving her
Masters Degree. Mr. Rapp needed someone in '61. To teach
kindergarten, and she was the one. She also kept books and coached
volleyball. Then added more classes each year in the fall. '92 she retired,
but with much more to do. She served on the board and substitutes, too.
She's played at her church since she was sixteen. Being there for her
friends in joys and tears. She still keeps books and is active in town..
She does her work well and won't let you down. Along with friend Jane,
she watches and waits Reading the papers for our Alumni's last dates.
Her mother was Alumni, husband Donald is, too. And following tradition,
her children wear blue. Son Rick, daughter Debra, and grandchildren
three. Came Nicholas, Nathaniel and Ashli to be. All New Harmony
graduates, successful and bright. Seeing their grandmother honored
tonight. Great grandchildren have arrived, Averie and Cole. For them to
be Rappites is now our new goal. Carolyn Stone, we appreciate all that
you do. And 2008's special prize goes to you. Congratulations, Mrs.
Stone!
