2007 Distinguished Alumnus!!! Ivan Alsop, Class of 1946
|
As Past President of the New Harmony Alumni Association, it is with
great honor and privilege that I present this year’s Distinguished
Alumnus Honoree.
I know that the committee has invested a great deal of thought and
consideration into awarding this year’s honor. I would like to ask you
to join me in thanking them for their efforts.
Started in 2005, the New Harmony Distinguished Alumnus Aware has
instituted a way to provide recognition of outstanding achievement for
men and women of New Harmony School.
What make this award so special, is that it is reserved solely for the
school’s alumni, and was created to honor those who have been
outstanding in their chosen field of endeavor and/or made significant
contributions to their community, state, nation, or school.
I would like to first recognize the former recipients of this fine award:
Nigel Jacquiss, Class of 1980
George Rapp, Class of 1955
Now, for this year’s honoree. As the award states, this year’s honoree
has truly been outstanding and significant.
Born and raised just outside of New Harmony, this year’s honoree
has been forever memorialized in a book…
After graduation from New Harmony High in the 1950’s, this
individual married a fellow New Harmony graduate and began a family.
As for a chosen field of endeavor, it was mostly Oil Fields or
construction fields that interested our 2007 honoree. Most of the
time, as a Boss of some sorts.
While work was important, this year’s honoree will be proud to tell
anyone that they are a parent and grandparent and has children and
grandchildren who have attended and graduated from New Harmony
school;
After spending nearly thirty years as a dedicated volunteer in every
civic organization and role known to New Harmony and Harmony
Township, this individual has been selected for every office once or
twice; Not to mention the office on the corner where normal office
hours were held to collect dog tax and other town gossip and banter.
This individual has played an instrumental role in the construction of
this building we are sitting in this evening…including, I think, the
strategic placement of every brick used during the construction.
A proud supporter and lover of Rappites in every competition, this
individual has been known to explain to officials when they were
making the incorrect call with those famous words we all know and
remember, Ah…Boo…Ref!
This year’s honoree has been married to his beloved wife, Rosemary,
for over 56 years and will celebrate his 79th birthday in just a few
short months.
I think you all know who we are talking about by now…
As the self proclaimed “Nosiest Man in Town”, you can clearly see
that this “Best Looking Man in Town” has spent a lifetime,
committing and dedicating himself to ensuring a lasting legacy of his
community. And Ivan has worked tirelessly to ensure that New
Harmony School remain a vital component of this place we call New
Harmony, the Garden Spot of the World!
It is again with a great honor and privilege that I present this award.
Would you please join me in recognizing the 2007 New Harmony
Distinguished Alumnus…
“Mr New Harmony!”
Mr. Ivan Alsop
